Pop Artist YAØ Returns With ‘WUW’

Pop artist YAØ has returned with a brand new single ‘WUW’ (What U Wanted). Released today on all digital platforms, ‘WUW’ is a soul-searching dancefloor burner that follows his charting single ‘I Can’t Sleep’, which made it to #28 on Spotify’s Viral chart and #86 on Shazam’s Top 200 charts in Singapore and cements YAØ as one of Singapore’s brightest pop minds.

Having shown the multiple colourful shades to his artistry with originals and remakes (‘Howl’s Moving Castle’ and ‘Don Don Donki’ both gained viral success on TikTok), YAØ simply isn’t content with leaving the year without another catchy joint that challenges Singapore’s pop scene while carrying a personal story. As he says it himself, it’s “a hard bop – one that Singapore hasn’t heard in a while.”

The multi-talented singer-songwriter and producer presents a song that speaks to all those lost in the rat race of capturing success. ‘WUW’ features a hook that would make pop-punk revivalists blush, and a charming flow that harnesses both rap swagger and dancefloor instincts. Most importantly, it’s about the affairs that keep us up at night, and the people that mean most to us.

“‘WUW’ is about how I should have loved the things that I truly care about, instead of worldly things which are fleeting,” he says. “These “things” are subjective to every person but personally to me, it refers to my relationship with the creator and the people I love.”

In ‘WUW’, YAØ reflects on a year of glowing promise and the journey it has taken him thus far. With bigger things on the horizon, the musician has diverted off the path to briefly recharge – preparing for the wins and losses that will come ahead.

“It is also about me coming to terms with facing the music because in the end, this is what I asked for: the struggles of chasing success my whole life, in this day and age,” he reflects. “In general, it is about how someone loses themselves when chasing success.”

For the new single, YAØ – a skilled producer in his own right – found the opportunity to hand the reins over to someone else: RIIDEM. Best known for his collaborations with Yung Raja, YHB Sleepsalot and other Def Jam Singapore luminaries, the hip-hop conductor turned out to be an instant match with the R&B-minded YAØ.

“Working with RIIDEM was such a joy and honour as he is really one of the hardest hip-hop producers in Singapore whom I look up to,” YAØ says. “It really felt like we shared the same vision for the song as we both agreed that we had to make it sound like a straight-up, no-nonsense banger.”

The single’s music video – directed by Bless7Up and produced by FERLOOPZ – takes a look into the mind of YAØ as he wanders off into the night lost in thought. This continues the nocturnal adventures he had in ‘I Can’t Sleep’ – but instead of searching for answers in other people, YAØ finds his own revelations amidst the bright city skyline and within its dimly-lit crevices. He also discovers a larger-than-life robot. What does this mean? You’ll have to keep your eyes glued on YAØ over the next year to find out.

‘WUW’ is yet another stake in YAØ’s claim in the Singapore pop landscape as an immovable force. With a new year arriving, YAØ is thinking big. More material is on the way in 2022, with “an album or possibly a few EPs”. Whatever form it takes, be ready.

‘WUW is available now on all streaming platforms and the Official Music Video will premiere tonight at 9PM. Listen here.
